Liverpool Make Informal Move for Alexander Isak in Potential Record-Breaking Deal
Liverpool have taken the first informal step toward a blockbuster move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, as they weigh up what could become a British record-breaking transfer.
According to talkSPORT, Liverpool have not submitted an official offer yet but have indicated that they’d be willing to pay up to £120 million for the Swedish forward—if Newcastle signal any willingness to negotiate.
The Magpies, however, are reportedly holding firm on their valuation of £150 million for the 25-year-old striker, who has become a central figure in their recent success. Newcastle remain hopeful of keeping Isak and are attempting to tie him down with a new contract, despite rising interest from other top European clubs.
Liverpool’s interest in Isak is said to be supported by a friendly relationship between their sporting director Richard Hughes and Newcastle manager Eddie Howe. However, the Reds are also eyeing Hugo Ekitike—currently a Newcastle target themselves—as a possible alternative.
Since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022, Isak has been nothing short of sensational. His contributions helped Newcastle return to the Champions League and famously lifted the Carabao Cup with a winning goal against Liverpool at Wembley. Last season, he bagged 23 goals in 34 Premier League games, powering the Magpies to a fifth-place finish and another taste of European competition.
Despite Liverpool’s strong interest, Isak has remained composed and publicly happy at St. James’ Park, showing no desire to force a move. But football pundit Jason Cundy suggests Newcastle may eventually accept a huge bid:
“Isak’s one of Europe’s most wanted strikers. If Newcastle do sell, it’s not going to be for less than £120 million.”
The Reds have been extremely active this transfer window under owners Fenway Sports Group, already splashing over £185 million. Notably, they shattered the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million, and also added full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez for a combined £70 million.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s only major summer signing so far has been Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55 million, as Howe looks to strengthen ahead of a challenging Premier League and Champions League campaign. Their £78 million bid for Hugo Ekitike was recently turned down by Frankfurt, but Howe is keen to pair him with Isak if a deal can be struck.
Still, with Liverpool circling both strikers, Newcastle’s transfer plans may face serious disruption.
