Liverpool are reassessing their transfer strategy in the attacking department after missing out on Antoine Semenyo, who is now expected to join Manchester City. With their primary target choosing a rival Premier League destination, the club has begun exploring alternative solutions to reinforce the forward line during the January window.
The situation has been made more urgent by Alexander Isak’s recent injury, which has left Liverpool short of depth in attack. While Hugo Ekitike remains a key option, the club are keen to provide additional support to avoid over-reliance on Mohamed Salah. Although Salah is expected to stay at Anfield in January, uncertainty surrounding his long-term future has encouraged Liverpool to evaluate both short-term and longer-term attacking options.
Reports suggest that Liverpool have identified two experienced forwards with previous Premier League exposure as possible stop-gap signings. One of those under consideration is Memphis Depay. The Dutch international endured a difficult spell at Manchester United earlier in his career but has since revived his reputation elsewhere, going on to become the Netherlands’ all-time leading goalscorer. Now playing for Corinthians in Brazil, the 31-year-old’s ties to the Dutch influence at Liverpool, including head coach Arne Slot, make him an intriguing and realistic option.
Another name on Liverpool’s radar is Atlético Madrid striker Alexander Sørloth. The Norwegian struggled to make an impact during his time at Crystal Palace but has since flourished in Spain. Across spells with Real Sociedad, Villarreal and Atlético Madrid, Sørloth has scored more than 50 goals in La Liga, establishing himself as a reliable and physical presence in attack. A loan move for the 30-year-old is reportedly being explored as a possible short-term solution.
Liverpool are also keeping a close watch on Brentford forward Igor Thiago, who has impressed this season. The Brazilian’s strong performances have reportedly caught the attention of Liverpool’s recruitment team, particularly in light of Isak’s injury. However, Brentford are expected to be reluctant to part with the striker midway through the campaign.
Away from attacking reinforcements, Liverpool’s defensive priorities remain unchanged. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi continues to be a major target after a late move failed in the summer transfer window. Current indications suggest a deal is more likely to materialise next summer when Guéhi’s contract expires, despite significant interest from other elite European clubs. There is also speculation that an informal understanding could already be in place for the England international to complete a move to Anfield at the end of the season
