Liverpool are preparing a potentially record-breaking move for a French winger after missing out on Antoine Semenyo, with a fierce transfer battle now developing against Arsenal around a €60 million valuation.
Having stepped away from a deal for Semenyo, the Reds have shifted their focus to Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jean-Matteo Bahoya, while also monitoring an alternative option within the Premier League. Reports suggest Liverpool remain fully committed to strengthening their wide attacking options despite recent setbacks.
Semenyo had emerged as a serious target after it became clear that the Bournemouth forward’s new contract contains a £65 million release clause that becomes active in January. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who maintains strong ties with Bournemouth, held talks over a possible move. However, Manchester City are now expected to win the race for Semenyo, ahead of Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham, with Liverpool choosing not to match City’s proposal for a variety of strategic reasons.
Despite missing out, Liverpool’s recruitment drive in wide areas continues. According to Anfield Watch, the club has identified two fresh targets, with Bahoya topping the list.
The France Under-21 international is firmly on Liverpool’s radar and could be available during the January window. The club is believed to be highly interested and confident that a deal may be possible at a manageable price. Frankfurt’s recent tactical switch to a wing-back system has reduced Bahoya’s prominence, as the setup does not play to his strengths as a natural winger. This development has further encouraged Liverpool’s interest, particularly with Arne Slot keen to add more speed and directness to his attacking options.
Bahoya is considered an ideal fit. He gained widespread attention last season after being labelled the fastest player in Europe, setting a Bundesliga record by becoming the first footballer to exceed 37 kilometres per hour in a match.
Liverpool are also tracking Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh, who previously worked under Slot at Feyenoord. The 21-year-old has impressed this season, but Brighton are expected to demand a significant fee, which could complicate negotiations.
Interest in Bahoya dates back several months, with Liverpool first linked to him in October. A move could also see him reunite with former Frankfurt teammate Hugo Ekitike. However, competition is intense. Arsenal are also pushing hard for Bahoya, having scouted him multiple times this season. Mikel Arteta is understood to be a strong admirer, and the player is said to be open to a move to the Premier League.
While some reports suggest Frankfurt could accept a lower figure, the German club are believed to be holding out for at least €60 million, equivalent to around £52 million.
Elsewhere, Liverpool have also been linked with Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz. Reports from Italy claim the Reds have made enquiries regarding his situation, with the Turkish international seeking a new contract that reflects his growing status in Serie A. Juventus are yet to meet his demands.
Reinforcements on the flanks are viewed as increasingly important as Liverpool prepare for the possibility of Mohamed Salah’s departure. The Egyptian forward has been linked with a January exit amid reports of frustration, though the club hope he will see out his contract. With Salah now 33, Liverpool are aware of the need to plan ahead and safeguard the long-term balance of their attack.
In other developments, Chelsea are said to have cooled their interest in a South American defender, leaving Liverpool in a strong position to pursue a deal valued at around €40 million. Such a signing could mark the beginning of a wider defensive overhaul.
