Barcelona have made another major statement about their faith in La Masia, with teenage defender Xavi Espart set to become a permanent member of the first team and take over the iconic No. 12 shirt. 😱🔵🔴
The promotion comes after a rapid rise that has seen Espart go from academy prospect to a player trusted by Hansi Flick on the biggest stage. Reports indicate that Barça have decided to register the 19 year old as a first team player, rewarding his impressive performances and his growing importance to the squad.
And this is not simply about changing a shirt number. 👀
Espart originally wore No. 36, reflecting his status as a reserve team player. After starting Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Elche at left back, however, his situation has changed dramatically. He is now expected to wear No. 12, a clear sign that the club sees him as part of the senior squad rather than merely another academy youngster waiting for an opportunity.
🔥 THE RISE HAS BEEN CRAZY!
Espart’s journey has already included a memorable Champions League debut. Earlier in 2026, he was unexpectedly introduced against Newcastle United at St James’ Park after Ronald Araújo was unable to continue. Despite the pressure, the young defender looked composed and helped Barcelona see out the game.
That appearance was particularly significant because Espart had come through Barcelona’s youth system after joining the club as a youngster. He went on to become an important member of the U19 side that won the league, Copa del Rey and UEFA Youth League treble before progressing toward Barça Atlètic and eventually the first team. 🌱🏆
Now, just months later, the academy graduate is receiving an even bigger vote of confidence.
💥 FLICK CLEARLY SEES SOMETHING SPECIAL
One of Espart’s biggest strengths is his versatility. He has shown the ability to operate in different defensive roles and can also contribute further forward when required. That flexibility is extremely valuable for Flick, particularly in a Barcelona squad where tactical adaptability is becoming increasingly important.
His performances during pre season reportedly strengthened the coaching staff’s belief that he was ready for a bigger role, and his impressive display against Elche only added fuel to the excitement surrounding him.
For Barça supporters, this is another reminder of what makes La Masia so special. ❤️💙
Barcelona continue to produce players capable of stepping directly into the first team, and Espart now has the opportunity to establish himself alongside the club’s established stars.
👕 NO. 36 OUT. NO. 12 IN.
The move from No. 36 to No. 12 may look like a small detail, but symbolically it is huge.
It tells Espart that Barcelona are no longer looking at him simply as a promising youngster.
They are looking at him as a first team player. 🔥
And with his confidence growing, his versatility attracting attention and Flick increasingly trusting him, the next chapter could be even more exciting.
