🔴🔥 Manchester United’s Left-Back Dilemma: Who Really Deserves the Starting Spot?

Manchester United’s left-back position is once again becoming one of the biggest talking points around Old Trafford, and with the club entering a demanding 2026/27 campaign, the debate over who should start is only getting hotter. 👀🔥

The Red Devils went through the summer transfer window without signing a new left-back, despite the position being identified as an area that needed strengthening. That leaves Michael Carrick with a familiar selection headache involving Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu and the versatile Diogo Dalot.

🥇 Luke Shaw: Experience Still Counts 🔥

When fully fit, Luke Shaw remains the obvious candidate.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a remarkable 2025/26 campaign, starting all 38 Premier League matches for United. It was a huge turnaround considering how much of his previous career had been disrupted by injuries.

Shaw brings something United’s other options cannot easily replicate: years of experience at the highest level, composure on the ball, defensive understanding and the ability to contribute going forward.

But there is one giant question hanging over him. 🤔

Can Shaw maintain that availability with United now facing a heavier schedule that includes Champions League football?

That could be the biggest factor in deciding how frequently Carrick rotates him.

⚡ Patrick Dorgu: The Young Challenger

Then comes Patrick Dorgu, and this is where things get interesting. 👀🇩🇰

The 21-year-old was originally brought to United as a left-sided wing-back and quickly demonstrated his physicality, pace and willingness to attack. United themselves describe him as a hard-running defender capable of playing across multiple positions.

However, under Carrick, Dorgu has increasingly been used higher up the pitch rather than as a conventional left-back. That makes his defensive consistency a bigger question mark if he is asked to become Shaw’s direct replacement.

Still, there is a massive opportunity here.

If Dorgu can improve the defensive side of his game, United could eventually have a younger, more energetic long-term solution on the left. 💨🔥

🛡️ Diogo Dalot: The Versatile Option

And then there is Diogo Dalot.

The Portuguese defender is naturally more comfortable on the right, but his versatility means he can operate on the left when required. United have previously relied on him in that role, making him a useful option when Shaw is unavailable.

The problem? Dalot playing left-back could potentially create another problem on the right, depending on who Carrick wants there.

So while he is dependable, he may be more valuable as a flexible squad option rather than United’s permanent answer at left-back.

🔥 So Who Should Start?

Right now, Luke Shaw has the strongest argument to be United’s first-choice left-back.

He was outstanding in terms of availability last season, remains the club’s only recognised senior left-back and has the experience needed for a campaign that now includes Champions League football.

But United absolutely need to manage his workload. Dorgu should be given opportunities, particularly against opponents where his pace and attacking aggression can cause problems. Dalot, meanwhile, remains the emergency insurance policy capable of filling gaps across the defence.

The bigger issue is that United still appear short of natural depth in this position. Even after the transfer window closed, the left-back situation remained unresolved, with reports indicating that strengthening the position had been a priority.

For now, though, the pecking order looks clear:

🥇 Luke Shaw – First choice when fit
🥈 Patrick Dorgu – The exciting challenger
🥉 Diogo Dalot – The versatile safety net

One thing is certain: United cannot afford another season of uncertainty at left-back. 👀🔴

With the Champions League returning to Old Trafford, Carrick will need every position to be properly covered. And if Shaw stays fit while Dorgu continues developing, United could finally have a fascinating battle for that spot. 🔥⚽
