Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk showed exactly why he remains such an important leader inside the dressing room after Alexander Isak’s explosive performance against Ipswich Town.
Isak stole the headlines at Portman Road, scoring twice inside the opening nine minutes to fire Liverpool to a 2-0 victory and give new manager Andoni Iraola his first Premier League win. Both goals were created by Cody Gakpo, while Liverpool ultimately kept a clean sheet in a much-improved defensive display.
But once the celebrations settled, Van Dijk had an important message for Isak.
Rather than allowing the striker to simply enjoy his brace, the Liverpool captain encouraged him to keep pushing, keep working and understand that his contribution must go far beyond scoring goals.
That is a message Van Dijk has delivered before. He has previously stressed that Liverpool expect more from Isak than simply putting the ball in the net, pointing to his ability to contribute through his movement, link-up play and overall influence on the team.
And after what happened at Ipswich, the timing could hardly be better.
Isak looked like a completely different player from the one who struggled for consistency last season. His movement was sharp, his finishing was ruthless and his confidence appeared to be returning with every touch.
The Swedish striker had even found the net three times already in the league this campaign, matching his entire Premier League goal tally from the previous season.
Van Dijk knows, however, that one outstanding night is only the beginning.
Liverpool have invested heavily in Isak, and the club will expect him to become one of the central figures of this new era under Iraola. The captain’s encouragement is therefore less about celebrating what Isak has already achieved and more about challenging him to maintain that level.
There was another sign of Van Dijk’s leadership after the match.
The Dutchman once again highlighted Gakpo’s importance to Liverpool, praising the forward after he supplied both assists for Isak’s goals. Van Dijk had already insisted before the transfer window closed that Gakpo was important to the team, and his performance against Ipswich only strengthened that belief.
The message from the captain is becoming increasingly clear: Liverpool’s new-look attack must work together.
Isak can provide the finishing. Gakpo can create. Barcola can bring pace and unpredictability. Wirtz can add creativity.
But Van Dijk wants the standards to remain high.
For Isak, this could be the moment everything finally clicks at Anfield. His first major statement has been made, but with his captain pushing him to demand even more from himself, Liverpool supporters will be hoping this is only the beginning of something special.
