Manchester United’s defensive situation has once again become one of the biggest talking points around the club, and the latest transfer picture makes the issue even more intriguing.
The summer window has closed, yet United’s need for defensive reinforcements has not disappeared. In fact, reports suggest that the club could revisit the position in the next transfer window after failing to add another established defender or left-back during the summer. The Guardian noted that United strengthened midfield significantly but left important defensive gaps unresolved.
One name that has repeatedly been connected with United is David Alaba.
The experienced Austrian left Real Madrid after the club confirmed that his contract would not be renewed, making him a free agent. His versatility remains one of his biggest attractions. Alaba can operate at centre-back, left-back and even in midfield, giving a manager several tactical options.
Manchester United were previously reported to have shown interest in bringing Alaba to Old Trafford, with the defender viewed as a potential source of experience and leadership.
And that experience could be valuable.
United currently have Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire and other defensive options, but fitness and consistency have remained concerns. De Ligt, for example, has already endured significant injury problems during his United career, including back surgery that kept him out for a considerable period.
The situation is particularly interesting because United also failed to strengthen at left-back.
Luke Shaw remains an important option, while Patrick Dorgu provides versatility, but United entered the new campaign without signing another specialist for the position. Reports have highlighted the left-back role as one of the areas the club may need to address going forward.
Then there is the Ben White situation.
Manchester United were previously reported to be monitoring the Arsenal defender, who can play both right-back and centre-back. White’s reduced role at Arsenal made him an interesting potential target, although any move would depend on Arsenal’s willingness to sell and United’s assessment of his fitness and value.
That versatility is exactly what could make a defender like White attractive to Carrick.
But there is a bigger question hanging over the entire situation.
Did United spend too much of their summer resources fixing the midfield while leaving the defence exposed?
The club invested heavily in midfield, bringing in Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba. Baleba alone reportedly arrived from Brighton for an initial £60 million, with the deal forming part of United’s major midfield overhaul.
The midfield now looks significantly deeper.
The defence, however, still raises questions.
That was evident in United’s recent struggles, and it explains why supporters continue to demand another commanding defender who can bring authority, consistency and leadership to the back line.
Alaba represents experience.
White represents versatility.
And United’s existing defensive options represent a mixture of talent, experience and fitness concerns.
The question is whether Carrick and the club believe the current group is good enough to compete on multiple fronts, especially with Champions League football now back on the schedule.
If the defensive weaknesses continue, United may have no choice but to return to the market.
And this time, the club cannot afford to get the decision wrong.
