Michael Carrick is facing growing scrutiny at Manchester United after a disastrous week ended with one of the club’s most painful collapses in decades. 😰
United appeared to be cruising against Brighton in the Carabao Cup after Shea Lacey and Mason Mount put them 2–0 ahead inside the opening 10 minutes. It looked like the perfect response after the Manchester derby defeat. Instead, everything fell apart. 🤯
Charalampos Kostoulas pulled one back just before half-time before Pascal Groß levelled in the second half. Only four minutes later, Maxim De Cuyper completed Brighton’s stunning comeback to send Old Trafford into disbelief. 💔
The defeat was historic. United had not previously lost at Old Trafford after leading by two goals since 1976, meaning the collapse ended a 50-year wait for a result of this kind. Even more frustrating, United failed to register another shot on target until the 76th minute after taking their early advantage.
And now former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has publicly questioned Carrick’s tactical approach. 👀
Saha believes United are playing far too slowly, particularly in midfield, with too much sideways passing and not enough urgency when moving the ball forward. According to his assessment, the lack of attacking patterns and acceleration is making Carrick’s system increasingly dangerous for the manager himself.
The criticism doesn’t stop there. Saha also highlighted United’s failure to consistently exploit the pace of Marcus Rashford, arguing that the team needs more direct attacking movements and quicker transitions to create one-on-one opportunities for its forwards. ⚡🔴
For Carrick, the timing could hardly be worse.
United have now suffered consecutive defeats against Manchester City and Brighton, while their Carabao Cup campaign has already ended at the first hurdle. Carrick himself accepted responsibility for the Brighton collapse and admitted that the performance was unacceptable.
The next challenge is Fulham. 👀
Carrick now has to find a response quickly. The questions are no longer only about individual players. They are increasingly about the system, the tempo, the attacking structure and whether United can consistently impose themselves on matches.
🔥 The pressure is rising at Old Trafford.
🔴 Can Carrick change the momentum before the situation becomes even more difficult?
