Matheus Cunha may have just given Manchester United a massive hint about where he can be most dangerous. 👀🔥
The Brazilian rescued United with a dramatic 89th-minute equaliser against Fulham, firing from outside the box before his effort took a huge deflection and flew past Bernd Leno. It was fortunate, but the bigger picture is what matters: Cunha looked far more threatening when he had space to drift towards the left and attack from that side.
And there were already signs of it earlier in the match. Cunha created an opening for Bruno Fernandes with a dangerous cutback, while another effort from the Brazilian took a wicked deflection and struck the post.
That is exactly why there is a growing argument for giving Cunha a proper run on the left wing. 🔴⚡️
Put a natural No.9 in front of him and suddenly Cunha has a different kind of freedom. He can receive the ball wider, drive directly at defenders, cut inside onto his stronger foot and arrive around the edge of the box with fewer bodies blocking his path. 😮💨🔥
Instead of asking him to constantly operate as a false nine, United could potentially unlock another dimension by allowing Cunha to start from the left and roam inside.
The Fulham game also highlighted why United need more attacking variety. Despite creating plenty of opportunities, they struggled to turn possession and chances into goals until Cunha produced the late rescue. United finished with 29 attempts, while Cunha’s strike ultimately prevented a third straight defeat in all competitions.
And there is another interesting statistic: according to Opta Analyst, Cunha has scored nine Premier League goals from outside the box since his competition debut in 2023, more than any other player in that period. 🎯🔥
So why not build around that strength?
Cunha on the left. A proper striker through the middle. Freedom to cut inside. Space to shoot. Defenders forced to make decisions. 👀🔴
Give him five or six consecutive games in that role and let him grow into it. The Brazilian has already shown that when he gets the ball in dangerous areas, he is capable of creating something out of nothing.
United may have stumbled away with a point at Fulham, but Cunha’s late intervention could have revealed a tactical idea worth exploring. 🇧🇷❤️🔥
