Kieran McKenna is suddenly back in the Manchester United conversation, and the timing could hardly be more dramatic. 👀🔥
The former United coach has been suggested as a potential replacement if Michael Carrick’s position eventually becomes untenable. TalkSPORT’s Alan Brazil specifically named McKenna as someone United could consider, pointing to his previous work at Old Trafford and the transformation he achieved at Ipswich.
McKenna knows Manchester United from the inside. He worked at the club under José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick before leaving in 2021 to take charge of Ipswich. His time at Portman Road turned him into one of English football’s most talked-about young coaches, as he guided Ipswich from League One back to the Premier League.

McKenna is currently unattached. He stepped down as Ipswich manager in June 2026 after guiding the club back to the Premier League, saying he wanted to take a break from management and spend more time with his family.
That means, if United ever decide to make a managerial change, they would not necessarily have to negotiate with another club to bring him in. 😳
Meanwhile, Carrick is already facing increased scrutiny following United’s difficult start to the season. United suffered defeats against Manchester City and Brighton, while the 3-2 Carabao Cup loss to Brighton was particularly painful after United had raced into a 2-0 lead. Reuters reported that Carrick has acknowledged responsibility for the situation while insisting his focus remains on finding solutions.
Then came another eyebrow-raising moment… 👀
McKenna was spotted inside the directors’ box at Old Trafford for United’s defeat to Brighton. His presence does not establish that United are preparing to replace Carrick, but given his history with the club and the pressure surrounding the manager, supporters immediately noticed.
There is also a fascinating twist to McKenna’s story.
When he left United, he was still viewed primarily as a promising coach. At Ipswich, however, he built a reputation as a manager capable of developing players, establishing a clear footballing identity and delivering promotion after promotion. By June 2026, he had taken Ipswich back to the Premier League for a second time.
So if Carrick’s situation deteriorates further, McKenna could become one of the names INEOS has to consider.
