Jamie Carragher has made his feelings crystal clear after Liverpool’s narrow victory over Bournemouth, with the former Reds defender calling for Florian Wirtz to be left out of the starting XI following a performance he considered well below the German’s standards. 😬
Liverpool managed to escape the Vitality Stadium with a crucial 1–0 victory, but the result did little to hide the concerns surrounding Wirtz’s display.
Alexander Isak eventually produced the decisive moment in the 57th minute, finishing after excellent work from Cody Gakpo and involvement from Wirtz. Liverpool took the three points, but Carragher was far from impressed by the £116 million summer signing’s overall contribution.
🔥 CARRAGHER DID NOT HOLD BACK
Speaking after the match, Carragher described Wirtz’s performance as one of the poorest he has seen from the midfielder in a Liverpool shirt and argued that Andoni Iraola should consider dropping him for Liverpool’s next major fixture.
The criticism comes after Wirtz struggled to impose himself on the match despite Liverpool eventually finding a way to win.
According to match statistics reported after the game, Wirtz completed 26 of 37 passes, had a team-low passing accuracy of 70.3%, recorded 53 touches and lost possession 16 times. He did, however, create three chances, which was joint-highest in the match.

Wirtz arrived at Liverpool with enormous expectations following his big-money move from Bayer Leverkusen.
But his adaptation to English football has not been completely smooth.
The German has produced moments of quality, yet his numbers and influence have not consistently matched the enormous expectations surrounding his transfer. His early-season performances have now opened the door for serious debate about whether he should temporarily start from the bench.
