Making the rounds online is reigniting the huge Manchester City vs Premier League story, with the words “Guilty — 115 charges” splashed across the graphic. But there is a crucial distinction between the viral claim and the actual legal status of the case. 👀
Back in February 2023, the Premier League referred Manchester City to an independent commission over alleged breaches of its rules covering financial information, sponsorship and related-party transactions, as well as alleged failures to cooperate with the investigation. The allegations cover multiple seasons, including periods dating back to 2009/10.
⚠️ However, “115 charges” does NOT mean Manchester City has been found guilty of 115 breaches.
The allegations were referred to an independent commission, and the Premier League’s own statement says the proceedings are conducted privately, with the commission’s final award to be published when proceedings conclude.
That distinction is extremely important.
Manchester City have consistently denied wrongdoing in the case and have maintained their position throughout the proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Premier League has separately reached outcomes with City on other matters. For example, in June 2025, City accepted a sanction relating to nine breaches of rules concerning kick-off and restart obligations during the 2024/25 season. That was a separate matter from the major financial case.
There has also been a separate legal dispute involving the Premier League’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules. In September 2025, the league and City reached a settlement over that arbitration, with City accepting that the current APT rules were valid and binding. Again, this is separate from the 115-charge disciplinary case.
So while the graphic screams “GUILTY”, the responsible way to describe the 115-charge story is that Manchester City were charged with alleged rule breaches and the case has been handled by an independent commission; the graphic itself is not evidence of a guilty verdict.
