Chris Smalling has officially turned another page in his remarkable career! 👀🔥 At 36, the former Manchester United and England centre-back is heading back to the European spotlight after completing a surprise move to FC Porto on a free transfer. 💙🐉
After spending the last two seasons with Saudi Pro League side Al-Fayha, Smalling was searching for his next challenge. Despite being without a club after leaving Saudi Arabia, the experienced defender made it clear that he still wanted to play at a high level. Now, he has landed a move that could put him right back on one of football’s biggest stages. 🌍🏆
And this isn’t just any comeback… it’s a Champions League comeback! 🤯🔥 Porto are competing in Europe’s elite competition, meaning Smalling could once again find himself battling against some of the best players and clubs on the continent.
The Englishman arrives with an incredible résumé. He made more than 580 senior club appearances, earned 31 England caps, won two Premier League titles with Manchester United and helped Roma lift the Europa Conference League under José Mourinho. 🏆🇬🇧
His journey is even more remarkable considering where it started. Smalling came through non-league football with Maidstone United before Fulham gave him his professional opportunity. Just a few years later, Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Manchester United. 🚀🔴
Now, nearly two decades after beginning that unbelievable journey, Smalling has another huge chapter to write.
Porto have handed him a one-year contract with an option for another season, with the experienced defender expected to provide additional depth and leadership in defence. His arrival also comes at a time when Porto are dealing with an injury to Nehuén Pérez.
And Smalling himself wasn’t ready to call time on the game. Earlier this year, he explained that he understands his body better now than when he was younger and remains motivated to continue playing. 💪⚽
From Maidstone ➡️ Fulham ➡️ Manchester United ➡️ Roma ➡️ Saudi Arabia ➡️ FC Porto…
What a journey. 🤯👏
At 36, Chris Smalling isn’t walking away from football.
He’s walking straight back into the Champions League. 😮💨🔥🏆
