Manchester United’s Defensive Rebuild: Is This The Back Four Carrick Needs?

Manchester United’s defence could be one of the biggest talking points around Michael Carrick’s team, and there is now plenty of debate about which four defenders should form the foundation of his back line.

With United already having several options including Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu, Carrick has plenty of pieces to work with.

The big question is simple: which four should United build around for the long term?

One potential back four could give Carrick a strong combination of pace, experience, aggression and quality on the ball. Yoro brings youth and recovery speed, while Martínez offers experience, leadership and an ability to play out from the back.

At full-back, United also have players capable of contributing both defensively and going forward, giving Carrick different tactical options depending on the opponent.

The need for defensive improvement is certainly being discussed around Old Trafford. Recent reports have suggested United could look to strengthen their defence, while analysis of the squad has also highlighted concerns surrounding injuries and long-term reliability among some of the current centre-backs. 👀

Carrick therefore faces a huge decision: trust the current group, promote more young defenders or bring in another major defensive signing.

And honestly, this is where the debate gets spicy.

Is this the back four Manchester United should build for Michael Carrick, or would you make changes?
