With Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui dealing with injuries, Manchester United suddenly have a serious problem to solve at left-back. Dorgu was sent back from Denmark duty after picking up a thigh injury, while Mazraoui was also forced off for Morocco. (Reuters)
And now, attention naturally turns toward two exciting young options: Harry Amass and Diego León.
Harry Amass already knows what it takes to play for the first team. The young defender made his United debut in March 2025 and has already gained valuable senior experience through loan spells, including time with Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City. (Manchester United)
Then there is Diego León.
The Paraguayan left-back arrived at Old Trafford in 2025 after making 33 appearances for Cerro Porteño. United describe him as a left-sided defender who is comfortable operating as a wing-back, and he remains one of the club’s promising young defensive talents. (Manchester United)
Interestingly, León finally got minutes under Michael Carrick in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Lausanne on October 3, although he is still waiting for his competitive first-team debut. (The Sun)
This could be the moment for Carrick to take a serious look at the youngsters.
United have invested time and resources into developing Amass and León, and injuries have now created an opportunity that simply cannot be ignored. Rather than constantly reshuffling experienced players into unfamiliar positions, giving one of these young left-backs a genuine run could provide energy, pace and hunger on the flank.
Amass brings previous first-team experience, while León represents a fresh option with plenty of potential. The pressure will be enormous, but these are exactly the situations where young players can announce themselves.
Carrington has produced stars before, and Manchester United’s history is built on giving talented youngsters a chance. If Amass or León is ready, this could be the perfect opportunity to step forward and show Carrick what they can do.
The left-back situation may have started as an injury headache, but it could also become the beginning of something very exciting at Old Trafford.
