Liverpool could be facing a major selection headache ahead of their huge Premier League clash with Manchester City, with Jérémy Jacquet now a doubt after suffering a hamstring strain while on international duty with France. The 21-year-old has quickly become an important part of Andoni Iraola’s defence, starting regularly alongside Virgil van Dijk. (Liverpool)
Now, Iraola may have to make a massive call before Sunday.
Araújo Or Gomez? The Big Question
If Jacquet fails to recover in time, Ronald Araújo looks like the obvious option to step into the centre of defence. The Barcelona loanee has already shown his versatility for Liverpool and was brought in partly because he can cover both centre-back and right-back. (This Is Anfield)
A Van Dijk and Araújo partnership against Manchester City would certainly bring plenty of physicality, aggression and experience.
But there is another option that could seriously tempt Iraola.
Joe Gomez has been working his way back after a muscle injury and has been viewed as valuable cover at both centre-back and right-back. Iraola previously expected Gomez to return to team training around the international break. (Liverpool FC)
Gomez brings something different. His experience in big Premier League matches could be extremely valuable against a Manchester City side capable of punishing even the smallest defensive mistake.
Iraola’s Biggest Test Yet?
The timing could not be more difficult. Liverpool are heading into a massive Anfield showdown with City, while Jacquet’s injury comes just as the young defender was establishing himself as one of the key pieces in Iraola’s new-look defence. (LiveScore)
The good news for Liverpool is that Jacquet’s injury has been described as a strain, with further assessment needed before his availability is confirmed. (Football Muse)
But if he misses out, Iraola must get this decision right.
Araújo offers power and aggression.
Gomez offers experience and versatility.
Van Dijk provides the leadership.
Against Manchester City, there is absolutely no room for experiments.
One wrong decision at the back could change the entire game.
