Barcelona’s defensive problems could force the club to explore the transfer market again, with Hansi Flick reportedly looking for ways to strengthen his backline ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.
The Catalan giants have several defensive concerns to address, and finding the right centre-back could become one of their biggest priorities. Flick needs defenders who can defend aggressively, remain composed under pressure, build attacks from the back and operate effectively in his high defensive line.
Interestingly, four different profiles have been mentioned as potential options for Barcelona. Each player offers something different, and choosing the right one could have a significant impact on the team’s defensive structure.

The Manchester City defender would represent an outstanding option because of his physical strength, recovery speed, technical ability and versatility. Gvardiol can operate as both a centre-back and left-back, giving Flick additional tactical flexibility. His ability to carry the ball forward would also suit Barcelona’s possession-based football.

The Inter Milan defender is another attractive profile. Bastoni is particularly impressive with his passing range, composure, defensive intelligence and ability to initiate attacks from the back. His experience in a back three and his quality on the ball could make him an interesting addition to Flick’s defensive system.

Manchester United’s Argentine defender brings aggression, leadership, excellent passing ability and a strong competitive mentality. Despite not being the tallest centre-back, Martínez compensates with his positioning, anticipation and willingness to challenge opponents. His ability to play through the opposition’s press could be valuable for Barcelona.

The Brazilian defender offers another interesting possibility. His physical presence, athleticism and defensive qualities could provide Barcelona with a different option at centre-back. He could also represent a younger alternative as the club considers its long-term defensive plans.
However, signing any of these defenders would depend on transfer fees, availability, salary demands and the willingness of their respective clubs to negotiate.
Barcelona cannot afford to make the wrong decision. Flick needs a defender who can immediately improve the team’s defensive stability while fitting into his demanding tactical philosophy.
