Top European Defender Turns Down Real Madrid to Join Hansi Flick at Barcelona

Jonathan Tah, considered one of Europe’s top central defenders, has reportedly declined an offer from Real Madrid in favor of joining Hansi Flick at Barcelona. Initially, Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso identified Tah as his primary target to strengthen the defense. However, the emergence of promising Spanish defender Dean Huijsen prompted a change in plans, with Madrid choosing to prioritize Huijsen instead.

Now a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, Tah has become a key target for Barcelona. According to Mundo Deportivo, new Barça manager Hansi Flick is eager to bring the 29-year-old to Camp Nou and has made a personal effort to secure the transfer, despite competition from Bayern Munich.

Although Tah once seemed a natural fit for Madrid due to his strong connection with Alonso, the club ultimately stepped away. Their reluctance stemmed from Tah’s willingness to entertain higher salary offers—something that clashes with Madrid’s current focus on young, long-term investments rather than expensive veterans.

Despite Huijsen’s signing, El Nacional claims Alonso still favored bringing in Tah. However, Flick’s last-minute approach appears to have been decisive.

Now, Tah is reportedly on the verge of joining Barcelona, having rejected Madrid’s proposal to become part of Flick’s new era at the Catalan club
