The 18-year-old was handed a huge opportunity at Anfield and showed why Liverpool have such high hopes for him. Ngumoha was lively on the left, repeatedly looking to attack his marker and eventually played an important role in the build-up to Alexis Mac Allister’s winning goal.
But despite his exciting attacking qualities, Ngumoha knows there is another side of the game he must master if he wants to become a regular under Iraola.
The young winger explained that his manager already recognises what he can offer going forward, but wants him to become much more effective without the ball.
“The manager knows I’m good at attacking, but to play you have to be good at defending as well, or you just have to work hard. That’s what he wants from me.”
That message perfectly sums up Iraola’s demands.
Liverpool’s new boss has placed enormous emphasis on intensity, pressing and collective defensive work. For Ngumoha, that means his dazzling dribbling and attacking ability alone will not be enough. He must also be willing to track back, press aggressively and contribute when Liverpool do not have possession.
And against Atlético, the youngster showed signs that he is already embracing those demands.
Ngumoha played around an hour and helped Liverpool overcome a difficult start after Marcos Llorente had put the visitors ahead. Dominik Szoboszlai levelled the contest before Mac Allister completed the comeback in the second half.
For Ngumoha, the occasion was about more than simply getting minutes.
He wanted to prove that he belongs at this level.
“I’m pleased that the gaffer put faith in me and I just wanted to prove to him and prove to myself that I could play at this level.”
And the atmosphere made the moment even more special.
The teenager admitted that hearing Anfield erupt during the comeback was something he had never experienced before, describing the stadium as “special.”
Liverpool supporters will certainly be excited by what they saw.
Ngumoha possesses pace, confidence and the courage to take defenders on — qualities that can become devastating once combined with the defensive discipline Iraola is demanding.
The message from the manager is clear: keep attacking, but work harder without the ball.
If Ngumoha can add that defensive intensity to his natural attacking talent, Liverpool may have another frightening young weapon ready to explode onto the biggest stage. 🔴🔥🏆
