Manchester United’s difficult start has sparked another major debate, and this time the spotlight is not only on the players but also on Michael Carrick’s approach to defending them. 👀🔴
After United’s 1–1 draw with Fulham, former captain Gary Neville argued that the manager needs to be more willing to hold his players accountable rather than constantly protecting them from criticism. His comments came after another performance that left supporters frustrated.
United had to rely on a late, deflected Matheus Cunha equaliser in the 89th minute to rescue a point after Lisandro Martínez’s own goal had put Fulham ahead.
The bigger concern was the overall intensity.
According to Reuters, United covered 6.6km less than Fulham during the match, while physical-performance data placed them near the bottom of the Premier League for several high-intensity running measures.
That has made the debate around Carrick even louder.
The manager has defended his team, insisting he liked the response after falling behind and arguing that United created enough chances to win the match.
But Neville’s argument is essentially that there comes a point when supporting your players and holding them responsible have to go hand in hand. 🔥
And the timing could hardly be more uncomfortable.
United had already suffered a 3–2 collapse against Brighton after leading 2–0 in the Carabao Cup, following a defeat to Manchester City. Carrick himself accepted responsibility for the Brighton collapse and said United had to respond.
Instead, they left Fulham with another draw.
The international break now gives Carrick time to assess what has gone wrong, but when United return, the expectations will be even higher.
