Fermín López is finally getting his chance to shine from the very beginning for Spain. The Barcelona midfielder has been named in the starting XI against Croatia in the UEFA Nations League, marking his first-ever start for La Roja in a competitive fixture. (Yahoo Sports)
This is a huge step for the 23-year-old, especially after the journey he has taken to reach this point. Fermín has already made seven appearances for Spain, but until now, his only start came in a friendly against Serbia. He has also registered two assists for the national team while still searching for his first international goal. (RFEF Official Website)
From Barcelona battles to the Spanish spotlight
At Barcelona, Fermín has had to fight relentlessly for his place in a midfield packed with elite talent. His energy, aggressive movement, ability to arrive in dangerous areas and willingness to attack defenders have made him one of the most exciting young midfielders in the squad.
His start to the 2026/27 season has only strengthened his case. Reports ahead of the Croatia game highlighted his impressive club form, including four goals and two assists in his opening seven appearances. (Yahoo Sports)
Now, Spain wants to see that same Fermín
Luis de la Fuente has handed him the responsibility from the first whistle, and this is more than simply another appearance. It is an opportunity for Fermín to show that his qualities can translate to the highest level of international football.
And the timing could hardly be more dramatic.
Spain are beginning a new chapter as world champions, returning home to Seville after their opening Nations League victory over England. Croatia, meanwhile, are another serious test for a side looking to maintain its momentum. (RFEF Official Website)
Fermín is not starting just to fill a position
He brings intensity. He brings movement. He brings goals from midfield. And most importantly, he plays with the kind of fearless personality that can change a game in a few touches.
Now comes the moment Barcelona supporters have been waiting to see on the international stage.
Fermín has earned the opportunity.
The spotlight is on him.
And if there is one thing about Fermín López, it is that he rarely needs an invitation to make himself noticed.
Tonight could be the night he turns an international opportunity into an international statement.
