Manchester United could be heading towards a major defensive shake-up in the upcoming January transfer window, with Barcelona reportedly making enquiries about signing Lisandro Martínez.
The Argentine defender’s future at Old Trafford has become increasingly uncertain following his public criticism of the club’s football director, Jason Wilcox. His comments reportedly resulted in a club fine, adding further tension to an already difficult situation.
According to recent reports, Barcelona are seriously considering Martínez as they look to strengthen Hansi Flick’s defensive options. The Spanish giants admire his experience, aggressive defending and ability to play out from the back.
However, United are not expected to let him leave without considering their options, especially with Martínez still regarded as an important member of the squad when fit.
If the Argentine eventually departs, three defenders have emerged as potential replacements:
🔴 1. JARRAD BRANTHWAITE (EVERTON)
The English defender remains a dream target for Manchester United. His Premier League experience, physical presence, aerial ability and versatility make him an attractive option. However, Everton could demand more than £80 million for his signature.
🔴 2. MURILLO (NOTTINGHAM FOREST)
The Brazilian centre-back is another exciting possibility. Known for his strength, aggression, composure and ability to play out from the back, Murillo could bring something different to United’s defensive department. Nottingham Forest could reportedly demand around £70 million.
🔴 3. CASTELLO LUKEBA (RB LEIPZIG)
The French defender is also attracting attention. At just 23, Lukeba offers significant potential, excellent recovery pace and the ability to defend large spaces. He could reportedly cost more than £50 million.
With Barcelona monitoring Martínez and United potentially preparing for life without their Argentine defender, January could become a defining transfer window for the Red Devils.
The big question is whether United should cash in on Martínez and invest in a younger defender or fight to keep him at Old Trafford.
