Liverpool are already looking towards the future, and the possibility of losing their legendary captain, Virgil van Dijk, could force the Reds into one of their biggest defensive rebuilds in recent years! 👀
According to reports from Football Insider, Liverpool have identified FOUR high-profile defenders as potential successors to the Dutchman, with Nico Schlotterbeck, Murillo, Alessandro Bastoni and Jules Koundé all reportedly on their radar.
With Van Dijk and Joe Gomez approaching the final stages of their current contracts, Liverpool are understood to be exploring their options ahead of the upcoming transfer windows. Yahoo Sports +1
But who would be the perfect man to take over the defensive throne at Anfield? Let’s look at the candidates! 🔥
1. NICO SCHLOTTERBECK 🇩🇪
The Borussia Dortmund defender is reportedly a long-term Liverpool target, and it’s easy to understand the attraction.
Schlotterbeck is aggressive, physically strong, comfortable on the ball and possesses the passing ability required to build attacks from the back.
His left-footed profile could make him an excellent option on the left side of Liverpool’s defence. However, his recent contract extension with Dortmund could make negotiations difficult. LiveScore +1
2. MURILLO 🇧🇷
This Brazilian powerhouse would bring serious physicality to Liverpool’s defensive line! 💪
Murillo has already demonstrated his quality in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest. His strength, aggression, recovery ability and confidence in possession make him an exciting candidate.
He also understands the demands of English football, meaning he wouldn’t need much time to adapt to the Premier League.
Could Liverpool finally bring him to Anfield? 👀
3. ALESSANDRO BASTONI 🇮🇹
For me, this is one of the most exciting names on the entire shortlist! ❤️🔥
The Inter Milan defender is an outstanding ball-playing centre-back who combines intelligence, composure, defensive awareness and leadership.
Bastoni can break opposition pressing lines with his passing, remain calm under pressure and help dictate the tempo from defence.
He has also been identified in previous reports as a particularly attractive option for Liverpool because of his experience and leadership qualities. The biggest obstacle could be convincing Inter to sell one of their most important players. Yahoo Sports +1
4. JULES KOUNDÉ 🇫🇷
Barcelona’s defensive star is another interesting possibility.
Koundé is known for his pace, defensive intelligence, tackling ability and versatility. He can operate as a centre-back or right-back, giving Liverpool valuable tactical flexibility.
However, his ability to play multiple positions could make him more useful as a versatile defensive option rather than a direct replacement for Van Dijk.
WHAT ABOUT RONALD ARAÚJO? 🇺🇾
Liverpool are also reportedly considering making Ronald Araújo’s move permanent.
The Uruguayan brings aggression, athleticism, strength and valuable experience at the highest level. His long-term position could even be at right-back, depending on the club’s defensive plans. Yahoo Sports +1
The big question is whether Liverpool will sign one established superstar or build an entirely new defensive partnership for the future.
MY VERDICT: BASTONI OR SCHLOTTERBECK! 🔥
Liverpool cannot simply replace Van Dijk’s name on the team sheet. They need someone capable of commanding the backline, organising the defence and giving the entire team confidence.
Bastoni would be my dream signing, with Schlotterbeck a very close second.
One thing is certain: replacing a player like Van Dijk will not be an easy job!
