Manchester United cannot continue turning a blind eye to the costly mistakes of Lisandro Martínez. At some point, enough has to be enough, and today’s performance has only made the situation more frustrating.
Once again, Martínez has found himself at the centre of a major defensive disaster. After giving away a penalty, the Argentine defender compounded his mistake by getting himself sent off following a moment of unnecessary carelessness.
Instead of helping his teammates maintain control of the game, he left them fighting an even bigger battle with ten men. How many times must Manchester United find themselves in difficult situations because of avoidable individual errors?
This is becoming a worrying pattern. Whether it is costly defensive mistakes, unnecessary disciplinary problems or moments of poor judgement, Martínez is making life increasingly difficult for the team.
Nobody is denying his passion, aggression or commitment to Manchester United. When fully focused, he can be an excellent defender. His ability on the ball, aggression in challenges and willingness to fight for the badge have previously made him an important part of the squad.
However, passion without discipline can become a serious problem.
Manchester United need defenders who understand the importance of composure, concentration and responsibility, especially in high-pressure situations. You cannot constantly put your teammates under unnecessary pressure and expect the team to keep recovering from the same mistakes.
The Premier League is unforgiving, and United cannot afford defenders who repeatedly turn manageable situations into major problems.
January could therefore present an opportunity for the club to seriously reconsider Martínez’s future. If the right offer arrives, should Manchester United cash in and invest in a more reliable defensive option?
This is not about disrespecting a player or ignoring what he has contributed. It is about putting Manchester United’s interests first.
