José Mourinho has revealed the tactical reasoning behind his decision to start Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of Denzel Dumfries, highlighting the former Liverpool star’s exceptional technical ability, creativity and influence in possession.
Speaking about the selection, Mourinho explained:
“We had the option to start either Trent or Dumfries today, and we decided Trent could help us better, with his technical quality, especially to help us in build-up, and with his playmaking.”
🎯 According to Mourinho, Trent’s ability to dictate play from deeper positions, deliver progressive passes and create opportunities was particularly important for the team’s tactical approach.
Unlike Dumfries, whose game offers different physical and attacking qualities, Trent provides a unique dimension with his passing range, vision and ability to unlock defensive structures.
🔥 Mourinho clearly wanted someone capable of making a difference with the ball, and he believed Trent’s technical qualities were better suited to the demands of this particular game.
👀 Was Mourinho right to choose Trent over Dumfries?
