Manchester United Finalizes Double Transfer After Missing Out on Viktor Gyokeres
Manchester United have completed two new signings as they continue their search for a top-class striker following a disappointing goal tally last season. The club scored only 44 Premier League goals, with forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee contributing just seven between them—highlighting the urgent need for a more clinical finisher.
United’s main target, Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting CP, appears to be slipping away. The Swedish striker is reportedly favoring a move to Arsenal, drawn by the allure of Champions League football and life in London. Although Manchester United are still monitoring the situation, they’re expected to step back unless Arsenal completely drop out. Juventus have also entered the race, making United’s pursuit even more unlikely.
Gyokeres had a sensational 2024/25 season, scoring 54 goals and assisting 13 times. Sporting are open to selling him for £68 million, but United lack the advantage of Champions League qualification—something the striker prioritizes.
Manager Ruben Amorim is known to favor players who are genuinely committed to joining the club, rather than those choosing teams solely for European competition. This philosophy may influence the club’s next move.
Two other striker options are currently under consideration:
- Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt): The 22-year-old had an impressive Bundesliga season with 17 goals and 6 assists. He reportedly wants to join United despite the absence of Champions League football. However, Frankfurt’s £85 million price tag could be a major stumbling block.
- Victor Osimhen (Napoli): Despite battling injuries, the Nigerian international still netted 17 goals last season. His release clause stands at £64 million, which is more affordable than Ekitike’s fee, but his high wage demands (£350,000 per week) may prove challenging. Nonetheless, Osimhen is believed to be very interested in playing for United, and that passion could help lower his salary expectations.
Given that Gyokeres seems out of reach and Juventus are now involved, United might be better off pursuing either Ekitike or Osimhen—both of whom align more closely with Amorim’s long-term vision and could solve United’s goalscoring issues.
