Fabrizio Romano Reveals Liverpool’s Backup Plan if Isak Deal Fails: PSG Star Eyed
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool have a high-profile backup plan in place should their ongoing pursuit of Alexander Isak fall through in the final stretch of the summer transfer window.
The Reds are currently chasing the signature of Newcastle United’s Swedish striker, Alexander Isak, who has been training alone after missing the Magpies’ pre-season tour of Asia. Their initial £110 million bid was rejected, but Newcastle-based journalist Lee Ryder has suggested that a second offer from Anfield is likely imminent.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are preparing to part ways with Darwin Núñez. Romano reported this week that a verbal agreement has been reached for the 26-year-old striker to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, with his medical expected soon—marking the end of his time at Anfield.
Bradley Barcola Emerges as Liverpool’s ‘Dream Option’
If the Isak deal collapses, Romano believes the Merseyside club may shift their focus to Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, who is seen internally as a “dream” signing at Anfield.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained:
“If Newcastle United refuse to sell Isak and close the door on negotiations, Liverpool could consider a top-tier winger instead. Bradley Barcola is seen as a dream option within the club.”
Although Barcola is admired by Liverpool’s recruitment team, Romano clarified that no contact has yet been made with either the player or PSG. As it stands, Isak remains Liverpool’s primary target as they look to reinforce their forward line following Núñez’s exit.
Barcola Move Unlikely, But Not Off the Table
Barcola’s potential arrival at Anfield remains highly unlikely for now. With Luis Díaz reportedly heading to Bayern Munich, Cody Gakpo stands as the only experienced left-winger in Arne Slot’s squad. However, teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha has impressed during pre-season, possibly putting himself in contention for a bigger role this term.
Still, it’s easy to see why Liverpool would be interested in Barcola. The 22-year-old Frenchman was instrumental in PSG’s historic 2024–25 campaign, scoring 21 goals and assisting 19 as the Parisians clinched the Ligue 1 title and their first-ever Champions League trophy—eliminating Liverpool along the way.
However, persuading PSG to part with one of their brightest stars would be an enormous challenge. Even Liverpool’s astute sporting director Richard Hughes might struggle to pull off such a high-stakes negotiation.
What Comes Next for Liverpool?
While Barcola is an attractive fallback option, the reality is that Liverpool’s most urgent needs lie in the striker and centre-back positions. With Núñez leaving and depth concerns in defence, the Reds are prioritizing reinforcements in those areas before the transfer window shuts.
Nonetheless, having a contingency plan like Barcola ensures that Liverpool won’t be left scrambling should the Isak deal collapse. The young winger has already proven his ability to shine on the biggest stage, and if a miracle move can be pulled off, he would be an exciting addition to Arne Slot’s evolving squad.
