Everton manager David Moyes has praised Chelsea’s attacking quality after his side suffered a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, despite Everton putting in one of their most impressive away performances of the season.
Chelsea secured the win thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto, moving the Blues into the Premier League’s top four. Palmer opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing clinically following a precise through ball from Gusto. Gusto then doubled Chelsea’s lead just before halftime, calmly converting from inside the box to give his team a comfortable advantage.
Moyes, while disappointed by the result, acknowledged that Everton created opportunities but were unable to capitalize in the final third. He singled out three Chelsea players—Gusto, Trevoh Chalobah, and Wesley Fofana—for their significant influence in advanced positions, which proved decisive in controlling the game.
“We did a lot of really good things, but we couldn’t finish it off,” Moyes reflected. “I have no complaints about the players except for the final third — if you don’t take your chances, you don’t win the game.”
Gusto was particularly impressive, contributing both a goal and an assist, consistently pushing forward from right-back and creating danger with intelligent passing and movement. His ability to link up play and break defensive lines was a standout feature of Chelsea’s attacking display.
Chalobah and Fofana, although not on the scoresheet, played crucial roles in sustaining pressure high up the pitch. Their composure on the ball and willingness to step into midfield allowed Chelsea to retain possession and launch quick attacking transitions, making it difficult for Everton to regain control.
Everton did create a handful of scoring opportunities, including a late effort that rattled the post, but ultimately lacked the clinical edge required to break down Chelsea’s defence. Moyes conceded that while his side pushed Chelsea close at times, it was the marginal differences in key moments that dictated the outcome:
“We just dropped a couple of runners at times when they showed quality. We pushed them close. That’s what we have to try to do.”
Looking ahead, Chelsea now turn their attention to the EFL Cup quarter-finals against Cardiff City, aiming to maintain their winning momentum.
