Manchester United Put a £160 Million Price Tag on Kobbie Mainoo

Manchester United appear to have sent a huge warning to clubs monitoring Kobbie Mainoo: the academy star will not be allowed to leave cheaply.

Reports claim United value the 21-year-old midfielder at an eye-watering £160 million, a figure that immediately puts Mainoo among the most highly valued young midfielders in world football.

And considering the journey Mainoo has taken at Old Trafford, the valuation is a clear reflection of how highly the club rates his long-term potential.

Mainoo has already experienced an extraordinary rise. After progressing through United’s academy, he established himself in the senior team at a remarkably young age and has gone on to become an important part of the club’s midfield plans.

His development has not been completely straightforward, though. His role became uncertain under Ruben Amorim, and there was even speculation that Mainoo could consider leaving in search of regular football. However, his fortunes changed dramatically after Michael Carrick took charge.

United have since made their intentions much clearer.

In April 2026, Mainoo signed a new long-term contract that keeps him at Old Trafford until 2031, strengthening the club’s position over his future. Sky Sports reported that the new agreement was designed to reflect his rapid progression and growing importance to the first team.

His performances have also continued to strengthen his case.

Mainoo played an important role in United’s recent victory over Ipswich, operating effectively in Carrick’s midfield system while helping the team produce a much more convincing attacking performance.

The timing of the reported £160 million valuation is particularly interesting because United have spent heavily rebuilding their midfield. The club brought in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos before completing the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton, yet Mainoo remains one of the most important pieces of the long-term project.

That tells its own story.

United are not simply protecting an academy graduate because of his sentimental value to the club. They appear to see Mainoo as a potentially elite midfielder capable of becoming one of the faces of the next generation at Old Trafford.

A £160 million valuation does not necessarily mean United expect someone to actually pay that amount. It is more accurately a message about negotiating power and the player’s importance.

The message is simple: if anyone wants Kobbie Mainoo, they will have to pay an extraordinary price.

For a player who is still only 21, has already accumulated significant Premier League experience, has represented England and now has a contract running until 2031, United have every reason to believe his best years are still ahead of him.

And with the club investing heavily in rebuilding its midfield around a younger core, selling Mainoo would make little sense unless an extraordinary offer arrived.

Manchester United have spent years searching for a midfield identity.

They may now believe they already have one of the most important pieces sitting right in front of them.

£160 million is an outrageous number.

But as a statement of intent, it could not be much clearer: Kobbie Mainoo is considered a cornerstone of Manchester United’s future, not a player the club is actively looking to sell.
