Thiago Alcantara has given Manchester United supporters plenty to think about after offering a glowing assessment of Kobbie Mainoo and identifying what he believes is the youngster’s ideal position.
The former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool midfielder believes Mainoo should be deployed as a modern No.8, a role that would allow him to combine his defensive work with his ability to carry the ball, beat opponents and attack the penalty area.
“I love him,” Thiago said when discussing Mainoo. He then explained that he would use the Manchester United academy graduate as a No.8 because of his ability to defend, play aggressively and contribute further up the pitch.
It is a fascinating assessment because Mainoo has already demonstrated that he is far more versatile than simply being a holding midfielder.
The 21-year-old is officially listed as a midfielder by Manchester United and has developed through the club’s academy into a senior England international. His profile is built around composure, close control and the ability to progress the ball through midfield.
Thiago’s argument is that United should take advantage of all those qualities rather than restricting Mainoo.
As a No.8, Mainoo could be given greater freedom to receive possession, drive forward, arrive around the edge of the box and make late runs into dangerous areas.
That is where the former Spain international sees another major strength.
Mainoo can dribble.
He can carry the ball through pressure.
He can compete defensively.
And, crucially, he has shown that he can make himself a threat around the opposition penalty area.
Those qualities make the No.8 position particularly intriguing.
Mainoo’s recent performances have only strengthened the argument that he deserves an important role in United’s midfield. He impressed during the club’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich, making his first start of the season as Michael Carrick’s side produced one of their most convincing attacking displays.
His importance to United has also been a major talking point following the club’s substantial midfield rebuild.
United have added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos and have continued to reshape the position under Carrick. Despite the new arrivals, Mainoo remains one of the club’s most intriguing young midfield options.
That makes Thiago’s comments even more significant.
The former midfielder is essentially describing a player who could operate between the defensive and attacking phases, offering United energy without sacrificing technical quality.
Mainoo does not necessarily need to become a pure attacking midfielder.
He does not necessarily need to be the deepest player in midfield either.
Instead, his greatest value could come from being the midfielder who connects everything.
Win the ball.
Turn away from pressure.
Carry it forward.
Break the lines.
Arrive in the box.
And still contribute defensively.
That is the modern No.8 profile Thiago appears to see in him.
For United, the challenge will be finding the tactical structure that gives Mainoo enough freedom to display those qualities while also providing the defensive cover required behind him.
If Carrick can get that balance right, Mainoo could become one of the most influential players in United’s midfield.
Thiago has already made his choice.
Now the question is whether Manchester United will give Mainoo the freedom to prove him right.
