Andoni Iraola may have stumbled upon a solution to one of Liverpool’s biggest problems this season. Ronald Araujo’s performance at right back against Ipswich has suddenly made the position a fascinating selection debate. 🧱⚡
Araujo was handed his first Liverpool start at right back ahead of Jeremie Frimpong and responded with exactly the kind of defensive authority Liverpool have been craving. 💪🇺🇾 He was aggressive in duels, strong in challenges and composed when Ipswich tried to threaten down his side. His performance also helped Liverpool secure a clean sheet in the impressive 2-0 victory.
That defensive stability could be extremely important for Iraola. Liverpool have already shown vulnerability at the back early in the campaign, while Frimpong’s performances in the position have attracted criticism.
But Frimpong is far from finished! ⚡🔥
The Dutchman offers a completely different profile. His explosive pace, attacking instincts and ability to make dangerous runs from deep can stretch opponents and give Liverpool another weapon going forward. He has also explained that he is becoming increasingly comfortable playing as a traditional right back under Iraola. 🏃♂️💨
Araujo, meanwhile, brings the physical presence and defensive security of a centre-back who is capable of operating on the right. Liverpool officially describe him as a defender who can play on the right side, and his versatility was one of the reasons his season-long loan from Barcelona was so valuable to Iraola.
And the timing could not be more interesting. Liverpool’s next Champions League fixture is against Atlético Madrid, meaning Iraola now has a major tactical decision to make. 🌍🏆
Does he trust Frimpong’s attacking explosiveness? ⚡
Or does he choose Araujo’s defensive strength and allow Liverpool’s other attackers to provide the width and creativity? 🧠🔥
After what Araujo produced against Ipswich, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the argument for keeping him at right back. He may not offer everything Frimpong gives going forward, but his defensive presence could give Liverpool a much-needed foundation. 🛡️🔴
One thing is certain: Iraola now has a very intriguing problem to solve. 👀
🔥 FRIMPONG: Pace, attacking threat, explosive movement
🛡️ ARAUJO: Strength, defensive security, duels and versatility
So Liverpool fans, who gets your vote?
⚡ FRIMPONG or 🧱 ARAUJO?
