Enzo Maresca has delivered a brutally confident message after Manchester City pulled off one of the most remarkable Manchester derby victories in recent memory. 🔵😱
City spent more than an hour with 10 men after Phil Foden was sent off in the first half, yet somehow walked out of Old Trafford with a 1–0 victory. Erling Haaland’s second-half strike proved decisive, while Gianluigi Donnarumma produced crucial saves to keep United frustrated until the final whistle.
And Maresca clearly loved every second of it. 😭🔥
The City boss pointed out that playing against 10 men was actually difficult for both teams because United were forced to face a completely different tactical setup.
With Foden dismissed, City dropped deeper, protected the central areas and deliberately refused to leave the spaces behind their defence that United normally look to attack. Maresca explained that United thrive when they can transition quickly into open space, but City’s reduced numbers allowed them to close those spaces down.
Then came the line that will absolutely annoy United supporters. 👀😂
“It always feels good to beat an opponent with 10 men, but even better against Manchester United.” 🔥🔴💀
And honestly, the result makes that statement sting even more.
United had the numerical advantage for over 70 minutes. They were playing at Old Trafford. They had the crowd behind them. They had enough attacking talent to punish City.
Yet City defended like their lives depended on it.
United managed only a handful of genuine efforts on target, with Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both hitting the woodwork, while Donnarumma saved brilliantly late on from Bryan Mbeumo to preserve the victory.
Maresca’s side didn’t simply survive.
They believed they could win. 💪🔵
That mentality was evident from the moment Foden was sent off. Rather than completely abandoning their attacking plan, City reorganised, stayed compact and waited for their opportunities.
Then Haaland struck in the 60th minute. ⚡️🥶
The goal itself remains controversial because Enzo Fernández appeared to be in an offside position during the move. VAR eventually allowed it to stand, although ProRef later acknowledged that the officials made an error in their decision-making.
But City didn’t care.
They had the lead.
United had the man advantage.
And somehow, United still couldn’t break them down. 😭🔴
For Maresca, this victory is enormous. It keeps City’s perfect start intact and gives the new manager a statement win in his first Manchester derby.
For Michael Carrick and Manchester United, however, the defeat raises uncomfortable questions.
How do you fail to beat a 10-man rival at home?
How do you dominate possession and still struggle to create enough?
And perhaps most painfully of all…
How do you lose the derby after your biggest rivals have been reduced to 10 men? 😳🔥
Maresca will celebrate.
United will have to answer some very difficult questions. 🔴💔
