Michael Carrick may need to go back to the drawing board and rediscover the formula that brought Manchester United success last season. After a difficult start to the new campaign and the painful 3-2 Carabao Cup collapse against Brighton, the pressure is growing for the manager to find answers quickly. (Manchester United)
One of the biggest talking points is now Marcus Rashford. For some supporters, the England forward should be given a place on the bench for the next game. That does not necessarily mean he should be brought on later just because of his name. If another player is performing better, Carrick should have the freedom to keep that player on the pitch. 👀🔥
Rashford has not been the only problem, and it would be unfair to put United’s struggles entirely on his shoulders. In fact, he had previously been praised for his performance against Everton before Carrick substituted him for fitness reasons. (Sports Mole)
But against Brighton, the bigger issue was the overall attacking performance. Benjamin Šeško struggled to make the impact United needed, while 19-year-old Shea Lacey looked like one of the brightest players in the attack. Lacey scored United’s opener and was one of the few players who consistently brought energy and directness to the front line. (The Guardian)
And that could give Carrick something serious to think about. 🤔
If a young player is showing more hunger, movement and attacking spark than an established name, should reputation really decide who starts?
That is the kind of ruthless decision-making United may need right now. 🔥
Nobody should have an automatic starting place simply because of their status, transfer fee or reputation. Players have to earn their place through performances, intensity and what they bring to the team.
United’s collapse against Brighton made the situation even more urgent. They raced into a 2-0 lead through Lacey and Mason Mount, only to concede three goals and crash out of the Carabao Cup. It was the first time in 50 years that United had lost at Old Trafford after taking a two-goal lead. (The Guardian)
Carrick has accepted responsibility for the defeat and now faces the challenge of getting his team back on track. (The Guardian)
The message should be simple: no favourites, no guaranteed starters, no passengers. 🔴⚔️
If Rashford is not giving United enough, bench him.
If Šeško is struggling, give someone else an opportunity.
If Lacey is the player bringing the most energy, give him more responsibility.
Carrick now has to make the difficult calls and get the best out of the players who are actually delivering on the pitch.
Because at Manchester United, reputation can open the door…
But performance should decide who stays on the pitch. 🔥🔴
