Bruno Fernandes Has Been Playing Through Pain — United Captain Finally Gets a Break

United’s Captain Has Been Fighting Through Injury

Manchester United fans now have a major reason to look back at Bruno Fernandes’ recent performances with completely different eyes.

The United captain has reportedly been carrying a problem for around three weeks, with the issue believed to have started around the club’s Champions League victory over Sabah earlier this month. Despite the discomfort, Bruno continued to put his body on the line for United.

There was even genuine concern that he could miss the Premier League meetings with Manchester City and Fulham. Instead, Fernandes passed late fitness checks and played the full 90 minutes in both games.

That tells you everything about how important the Portuguese midfielder has become to this Manchester United side.

Bruno Refused to Step Away

While not operating at his best physically, Bruno continued to take responsibility in the middle of the pitch.

He then travelled to Portugal and started against Wales in the Nations League, despite arriving with the same issue. Portugal won 1-0, but Fernandes was eventually withdrawn late in the match.

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus subsequently confirmed that Bruno had been playing with pain for several matches and that the problem had affected his performance against Wales.

That revelation puts some of Bruno’s recent displays into context. The midfielder may not have been struggling for effort or commitment. He simply has not been playing at 100 percent.

Portugal Finally Decided Enough Was Enough

Portugal then chose not to risk Fernandes against Norway.

Jorge Jesus described the situation as a complicated problem and made it clear that the priority was allowing Bruno to recover properly rather than pushing him into another match. Fernandes was left out of Portugal’s squad for the Norway fixture.

For Manchester United supporters, that decision will come as a huge relief.

Bruno has played every minute of United’s five Premier League matches this season, while also featuring in European and cup competition.

We Need the Real Bruno Back

There is a massive difference between Bruno Fernandes playing because he is available and Bruno Fernandes playing because he is genuinely fit.

United need the captain who can press, create, dictate the tempo, demand the ball and drive the team forward for 90 minutes.

They do not need a version of Bruno who is constantly managing pain while trying to survive another game.

The fact that he was willing to play through the problem against Manchester City and Fulham shows just how badly he wanted to help his teammates. But eventually, even the captain needs permission to put his own body first.

Time for Proper Recovery

The biggest hope now is that Bruno gets the recovery time his body has been asking for.

Rather than rushing him back simply because Manchester United need him, the priority should be getting him back to full fitness.

Because when Bruno Fernandes is fully fit, United have a completely different presence in midfield.

The captain has already shown that he will play through pain for the badge.

Now the focus should be making sure he does not have to.
