Liverpool’s interest in Nico Schlotterbeck is one to watch as the Reds continue to consider options for the centre-back position

Liverpool’s interest in Nico Schlotterbeck is one to watch as the Reds continue to consider options for the centre-back position. Reports in September indicate that Liverpool remain interested in the Borussia Dortmund defender ahead of a possible summer 2027 move.

The Germany international was already on Liverpool’s radar before his latest Dortmund contract extension. His new deal runs until 2031, and Dortmund officially confirmed the extension in April.

There was also a fascinating clause attached to that contract. Reports from Sky Germany said a €50m–€60m release clause was available to a select group of clubs, including Liverpool and Real Madrid. However, that clause expired in July 2026, meaning it cannot simply be triggered now.

That changes the situation considerably.

Liverpool would now have to negotiate with Dortmund if they decide to pursue Schlotterbeck, rather than relying on the previous release clause.

The 26-year-old left-footed centre-back has established himself as an important player for Dortmund and Germany. Dortmund’s official announcement described him as a leader for both club and country, while highlighting his ability to play with and against the ball, tackle aggressively and help build attacks.

Liverpool’s interest also makes sense from a squad-planning perspective. If the club eventually needs another senior centre-back, Schlotterbeck’s experience in the Bundesliga and international football would make him a player worth monitoring.

There is, however, no confirmed agreement between Liverpool and Schlotterbeck at this stage. The latest reporting points towards Liverpool considering him as a target for 2027 rather than an imminent January move.

And that could make this one of the stories to follow over the next year. 👀

🔴 Liverpool have previously made contact with Schlotterbeck’s camp.
🇩🇪 The defender remains contracted to Dortmund until 2031.
💰 The reported €50m–€60m clause has already expired.
⏳ Liverpool are reportedly looking at a possible 2027 move.

If the Reds decide to make their interest concrete, Dortmund would now have a much stronger negotiating position. 🔥
