Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure from Liverpool has left a gap that has proven difficult to completely fill

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure from Liverpool has left a gap that has proven difficult to completely fill. The academy graduate left Anfield for Real Madrid in 2025 after making 354 appearances and winning eight major honours with the Reds.

More than a year later, the conversation around Trent has taken another twist.

The England international has struggled to establish himself as an automatic starter at Real Madrid, with injuries affecting his first season and competition for the right-back position increasing following the arrival of Denzel Dumfries.

That situation has inevitably led to speculation about a possible return to Liverpool.

There have been calls from former players and pundits for Liverpool to consider bringing their former vice-captain back, although there is currently no confirmed indication that Trent is trying to leave Real Madrid or that Liverpool are negotiating a return.

And that distinction is important.

Trent is now officially a Real Madrid player, with the Spanish club listing him as part of their first-team squad for the 2026/27 campaign. He has made five appearances so far this season, recording one assist.

For Liverpool, meanwhile, the club has moved into a new era under Andoni Iraola. Julian Ward has also returned as sporting director following Richard Hughes’ departure, adding another major change to the club’s football structure.

The question surrounding Trent is therefore fascinating.

Could Liverpool ever reopen that chapter?

For now, that’s speculation rather than an established transfer story. But the fact that the discussion continues shows just how significant Trent’s contribution was during his Liverpool career.

He wasn’t simply a right-back.

He became one of the main creative outlets in the team, producing chances, controlling games from deep and redefining what Liverpool expected from the position. His departure inevitably meant the Reds had to rebuild that part of their system.

Now the story has another layer.

Trent is trying to establish himself at Real Madrid. Liverpool are building under a new coach and sporting director. And the idea of a sensational reunion continues to circulate. 👀🔴

For now, though, a Liverpool return remains speculation — not a confirmed transfer.
