Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has reportedly expressed his frustration with Lisandro Martínez following the defender’s controversial red card against Chelsea, questioning his decision-making, discipline and commitment to the club.
Rooney is said to be particularly disappointed with the circumstances surrounding the dismissal. Martínez was already carrying a yellow card, yet his decision to elbow an opponent inside the penalty area has left United facing another difficult situation.
For Rooney, such behaviour is unacceptable from an experienced player who should understand the importance of keeping his emotions under control, especially in a high-pressure match where every decision can have serious consequences.
The former United captain reportedly went even further, questioning whether Martínez still has the desire to represent Manchester United and suggesting that the club should consider a major decision about his future if he is no longer fully committed.
But Rooney’s criticism did not stop with the Argentine defender. He also reportedly directed some responsibility towards the Manchester United board, arguing that the club should have addressed the situation earlier following Martínez’s previous controversial comments about the club and his teammates.
This latest controversy could create another uncomfortable situation behind the scenes at Old Trafford, particularly with Michael Carrick already facing pressure and United desperately needing stability.
Martínez is undoubtedly a passionate defender, but passion must never come at the expense of discipline. Manchester United need players who can remain focused, control their emotions and put the team’s interests first.
🔥 SHOULD MANCHESTER UNITED CONTINUE TRUSTING LISANDRO MARTÍNEZ, OR IS IT TIME FOR THE CLUB TO CONSIDER SELLING HIM?
