Alejandro Balde’s situation at Barcelona is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing selection battles under Hansi Flick. 👀🔥
The 22-year-old stayed at Barça this summer with the clear intention of fighting his way back into the starting XI, but the beginning of the 2026/27 campaign has been anything but straightforward for him. Reports indicate that Balde has yet to make his competitive debut this season, while academy graduate Xavi Espart has taken advantage of his opportunity at left-back.
And now Barça fans are asking one BIG question… 🤔
If Espart is becoming Flick’s preferred option in LaLiga and João Cancelo is being trusted in the Champions League, WHERE DOES BALDE PLAY? 😭🔥
Espart’s rapid emergence has completely changed the situation. The young defender has impressed Flick with his performances and versatility, earning opportunities that many probably did not expect before the season started. His form has even reportedly pushed established players further down the pecking order.
Meanwhile, Cancelo brings something completely different to the squad. The Portuguese full-back is capable of operating on both sides of the defence and has already been used in the Champions League, including Barça’s recent 5–1 victory over Feyenoord.
Then there is Balde. 👀
A player who not long ago looked like Barça’s long-term answer at left-back now finds himself fighting simply to get onto the pitch.
That is a HUGE development. 🚨
Flick has reportedly made his position clear: Balde cannot expect minutes simply because of his reputation or previous performances. He has to convince the German coach through his work, intensity and performances in training. Sporting director Deco has also backed Balde’s talent while making it clear that the decision over playing time ultimately belongs to Flick.
And the competition isn’t exactly getting weaker. 😮💨
Espart is gaining confidence.
Cancelo has experience at the highest level.
And Balde now has to fight both of them for opportunities. 🔥
The most logical solution could be rotation across all competitions. Barcelona have a long season ahead, with LaLiga, the Champions League and Copa del Rey demanding different levels of squad management. Flick could still find important minutes for Balde, particularly when rotation, injuries or tactical adjustments become necessary.
But if Espart continues producing performances like the ones that have earned him Flick’s trust, and Cancelo remains a reliable option in Europe, Balde cannot afford to sit back and wait. 😳
He needs a comeback.
He needs to force Flick into a difficult decision.
He needs to remind everyone why Barça once viewed him as one of their most exciting young full-backs. 💪🔵🔴
And that makes this battle absolutely fascinating.
Espart for LaLiga? 🇪🇸
Cancelo for Champions League? 🏆
So… BALDE FOR WHAT? 👀🔥
Maybe Copa del Rey? 🤔
Maybe rotation? 🔄
Maybe he eventually wins his place back? 👑
Or could January bring an even bigger decision about his future? 🚨
One thing is certain: Flick has created serious competition at full-back, and Balde now has to fight for every single minute. 🔥
