Darwin Nunez has spoken out after missing a penalty in Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds were knocked out of the competition following a 4-1 loss in the penalty shootout after the aggregate score finished 1-1.
Nunez, one of four Liverpool players to take a penalty, missed his attempt, while Mohamed Salah scored. Curtis Jones also missed, allowing PSG to progress. PSG’s Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Desire Doue all converted their penalties to secure the win.
Nunez had started the game on the bench, with Diogo Jota chosen to start. The Uruguayan was brought on in the second half and took the second penalty for Liverpool.
A day after the defeat, Nunez took to social media to post a seven-word message to Liverpool fans: “Get up and carry on, as always,” on X (formerly Twitter). After the penalty miss, Nunez was consoled by manager Arne Slot and his teammates. Slot also praised Nunez for his performance in the 3-1 Premier League victory over Southampton, highlighting his work rate and resilience.
“That’s the life of a No.9,” said Slot. “You go from missing a chance to scoring an important goal, and then missing again. But his work rate in the second half and the change in tempo was key.”
