The debate over Manchester United’s left-back position is getting hotter by the week. Should Luke Shaw remain the undisputed starter when fit, or is it time for Patrick Dorgu to take over and make the position his own? 🤔🔴
For me, Shaw should still be the first-choice left-back when he is fully fit. But Dorgu has a huge opportunity to challenge him and eventually take the position permanently. 💪⚡
Shaw remains United’s most experienced natural option on the left. His ability to defend, build from the back and understand the demands of playing for the club gives him an advantage. United’s lack of depth at left-back has also made his availability particularly important.
But then there is Patrick Dorgu. 😮💨🔥
The young defender brings something different: pace, power, aggression and attacking energy. His performance in United’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah gave supporters another glimpse of what he can offer from the flank. Carrick trusted him to start with Shaw unavailable, and Dorgu got valuable minutes in a position where United desperately need consistency.
However, the Manchester derby showed exactly why the debate isn’t over yet. Dorgu was involved in the defensive controversy surrounding Erling Haaland’s winning goal, with his positioning ultimately playing the striker onside. United went on to lose 1-0 despite City playing with ten men for more than an hour.
That doesn’t mean Dorgu should be written off. ❌
Far from it.
It simply shows that Dorgu is still developing. He has the physical tools to become an outstanding Premier League full-back, but the defensive awareness, positioning and consistency will need to improve.
Shaw, meanwhile, has the experience to provide stability immediately. His biggest enemy remains his fitness. United have already had to manage his workload, and he missed the Sabah game before also missing the Manchester derby.
So the ideal situation for Manchester United is clear:
🔴 Luke Shaw — first choice when fully fit
⚡ Patrick Dorgu — serious competition and rotation
🚀 Dorgu — potential long-term successor
The worst thing United could do is rush Dorgu into becoming the permanent starter simply because Shaw has fitness problems. Let the competition develop naturally. Give Dorgu important games, allow him to learn from his mistakes and keep pushing Shaw.
Because if Dorgu can add defensive discipline to his athleticism and attacking ability, United could eventually have a monster left-back on their hands. 😮💨🔥
For now, though, FIT LUKE SHAW STARTS. 👊🔴
And Dorgu? He needs to make Shaw’s position uncomfortable every single week. 👀⚔️
