Liverpool are already looking ahead to the future of their defence, with Virgil van Dijk approaching the final year of his contract at Anfield. The Dutch captain remains a key figure, but the Reds cannot wait until his departure becomes an immediate problem before planning for life after him. 👀

According to recent reports, Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has emerged as a leading candidate to eventually succeed Van Dijk at Liverpool. The 25-year-old’s profile is particularly interesting because of his explosive pace, left-footedness, physical strength and experience in the Premier League.

Liverpool have already begun reshaping their centre-back department. Ibrahima Konaté left the club when his contract expired and subsequently joined Real Madrid, while Jérémy Jacquet arrived from Rennes in a deal worth around £60 million. Ronald Araújo has also been brought into the squad on loan from Barcelona.

That means the transition has already started. 🔴

But replacing Van Dijk’s leadership, aerial presence and authority is a completely different challenge.

The Liverpool captain has been at the heart of the club’s defence since arriving from Southampton in 2018, becoming one of the defining defenders of the modern Liverpool era. With his contract currently running until June 2027, the club have a limited window to decide exactly how they want the next generation of their defence to look.

Van de Ven would represent a very different defensive profile. Rather than trying to recreate Van Dijk exactly, Liverpool could look for a younger centre-back capable of defending huge spaces and supporting an aggressive, high-line system. His speed could be particularly valuable in a team that wants to press high and recover possession quickly. ⚡🔥

And Liverpool’s rebuild at centre-back is already filled with intriguing names — Van de Ven, Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez and Ronald Araújo all represent different possibilities for the future.

The big question is no longer simply “Who replaces Van Dijk?”

It is what does Liverpool’s defence look like after Van Dijk? 👀🔴

The era of their legendary captain will eventually come to an end. Liverpool’s next defensive leader may already be on their radar. 🧱🔥
