An interesting situation is reportedly developing behind the scenes at Barcelona, with João Cancelo emerging as one of Alejandro Balde’s strongest supporters amid growing questions about the young defender’s situation under Hansi Flick.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Cancelo has been actively encouraging Balde, offering him advice and helping him deal with the difficult situation surrounding his recent involvement in the team.
The Portuguese international has reportedly gone a step further by defending Balde in conversations with Hansi Flick, making it clear that he believes in the youngster’s abilities and potential.
Interestingly, Cancelo is not reportedly the only senior Barcelona player concerned about Balde’s situation. Another experienced member of the dressing room has also questioned Flick over how the Spanish left-back has been utilised during training sessions.
This development is particularly interesting considering the competition for places at Barcelona, with Flick having several options available across his defensive line.
Balde remains an important player with enormous potential. His pace, overlapping runs, dribbling ability and attacking contribution make him a valuable option, especially when Barcelona need width and penetration from the left flank.
Cancelo’s reported support could therefore be important for the youngster, particularly at a time when uncertainty surrounds his role and long-term future at the club.
The biggest question is whether Flick will reconsider his approach and give Balde the confidence and opportunities he needs to rediscover his best form.
One thing is clear: having experienced teammates standing behind him could make a significant difference.
👀 Is Cancelo right to defend Balde, and should Hansi Flick give the young Spaniard more opportunities?
