Fabrizio Romano has shared a key update regarding Virgil van Dijk’s contract situation as Liverpool works to extend the defender’s stay at the club. Van Dijk’s current deal is set to expire at the end of June, which could make him available to leave on a free transfer and negotiate with foreign clubs immediately.
There have been speculations about the 33-year-old potentially moving to the Saudi Pro League, where Mohamed Salah is also a target. Reports from Arab media claim that Salah’s new contract is almost finalized, with talks nearing completion. However, in England, there are claims that both Van Dijk and Salah have already agreed to new terms.
Romano clarified that no decision has been made yet regarding Van Dijk’s future. He confirmed that discussions between Van Dijk’s agents and Liverpool’s director of football, Richard Hughes, took place before the Tottenham game, and the relationship between both parties remains positive.
Romano stated, “The decision has not been made yet, but the talks are ongoing.” Liverpool is still hopeful about extending Van Dijk’s contract, and they are working hard to reach an agreement. He added that while Van Dijk has not yet committed, the club remains optimistic and is pushing to keep the player.
Van Dijk has been with Liverpool since 2018, having played over 300 games for the club.
