Manchester United are reportedly preparing for an important January transfer window, with plans to strengthen both their defence and attacking department after privately acknowledging that their summer recruitment fell short in certain areas.
According to British newspaper The Sun, United recognise that they failed to address two important weaknesses during the previous transfer window: the lack of a natural left-back alternative and the absence of a reliable back-up striker.
The club are now exploring possible solutions, although financial limitations mean they may have to be creative with their January business.
🔴 LUKE SHAW COULD LEAVE OLD TRAFFORD!
One of the biggest developments concerns Luke Shaw. United reportedly intend to allow the England international to leave when his current contract expires in June.
The club are already considering potential replacements as they look towards the future of their left-back position.
🔴 LEFT-BACK TARGETS IDENTIFIED!
Two names have emerged on United’s radar:
- Tyrick Mitchell: The Crystal Palace defender is approaching the final six months of his contract, potentially making him an affordable January option. However, at 27, he falls outside United’s preferred recruitment age range of 22 to 26.
- Lewis Hall: The Newcastle United youngster is viewed as a realistic target for the summer despite recently signing a new contract in September.
Hall could represent a longer-term investment, while Mitchell offers a potentially cheaper short-term solution.
🔴 RODRIGO MUNIZ EMERGES AS A STRIKER OPTION!
Manchester United are also considering Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz as a possible short-term attacking reinforcement.
The Brazilian has reportedly been identified as an option because of his limited starting opportunities in Fulham’s league campaign, having started only in the League Cup this season.
United desperately need additional attacking depth, particularly with the demands of competing across multiple competitions.
🔴 JANUARY TRANSFER BUDGET WILL BE LIMITED!
Unfortunately, supporters should not expect Manchester United to spend enormous amounts of money in January.
The club are reportedly working with limited funds, meaning potential deals could follow a similar approach to previous loan moves involving Jack Butland, Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer, alongside affordable acquisitions such as Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.
Another important detail is that Jason Wilcox remains in control of recruitment. This means any potential managerial change would reportedly have little influence on the club’s overall transfer strategy.
🔴 ZIRKZEE AND AMASS COULD LEAVE!
Manchester United could also need to move players out before bringing new faces through the door.
Two names attracting attention are:
- Joshua Zirkzee: The Dutch striker has reportedly attracted interest from Italian clubs across the winter transfer windows since joining United from Bologna in 2024. A departure could help create room for another attacking signing.
- Harry Amass: The 19-year-old defender is reportedly exploring his future after struggling to secure first-team opportunities. He has not started a match this season despite Luke Shaw’s lengthy injury absence and has already changed agents twice.
It appears United are preparing for a significant squad reshuffle, with possible departures helping to finance new arrivals.
The January window could therefore be about addressing unfinished summer business rather than making expensive headline signings.
UNITED FANS, WHICH POSITION SHOULD BE THE BIGGEST PRIORITY IN JANUARY: LEFT-BACK, STRIKER OR BOTH? AND WOULD YOU SELL ZIRKZEE TO BRING IN A NEW NUMBER 9? 👀🔥
