Today marks 40 years since one of the most important appointments in Manchester United’s history. On November 6, 1986, Sir Alex Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford from Aberdeen, taking charge of a struggling United side that was dangerously close to the relegation zone.
What happened next became one of the greatest managerial stories football has ever witnessed.
Ferguson transformed Manchester United into a global football powerhouse, winning an incredible 38 major trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.
Now, 40 years later, Michael Carrick finds himself facing a difficult challenge of his own, with United once again struggling near the bottom of the table.
But Carrick believes another extraordinary transformation is possible, although he understands that rebuilding a club of United’s stature requires patience, hard work and the right foundations.
🗣️ Michael Carrick on whether United can achieve Ferguson-level success again:
“It’s not impossible. Anything’s possible. You’ve got to build, you’ve got to be realistic. Success does take time, and we don’t like having to spend time, but there are no shortcuts.”
Carrick also opened up about his relationship with Ferguson, admitting that he now speaks to the legendary former manager more frequently than he did during his playing days.
🗣️ On Ferguson’s influence:
“I’m probably closer to him now and speak more to him now than I did when I was playing… It’s more about the influence he had and the habits you try to pick up from him.”
The timing of this anniversary is particularly interesting following United’s dramatic Champions League comeback victory over Roma, which brought an end to their nine-game winless run.
Some supporters have already started drawing comparisons with the famous Mark Robins moment in 1990, when his FA Cup goal against Nottingham Forest helped ease the pressure on Ferguson.
However, Carrick is refusing to get carried away by the comparisons. He knows one memorable victory means very little unless the team can build on it.
🗣️ Carrick made his message clear:
“Nothing’s done yet. Nothing’s achieved yet, and it’s one moment in time that we need to use to move forward.”
Manchester United don’t necessarily need another Sir Alex Ferguson overnight. They need a clear vision, strong leadership, consistency and a team capable of restoring the winning mentality that once defined this football club.
40 YEARS OF SIR ALEX FERGUSON. 38 TROPHIES. 13 PREMIER LEAGUE TITLES. ONE UNFORGETTABLE LEGACY. 👑❤️
